Laos

Lan Xang - The Land of a Million Elephants

One of the smallest and poorest countries in Southeast Asia, Lao has a wonderful and unique charm. Omni mountainous, covered in thick jungle, and populated by warm friendly Buddhist folks alongside minority mountain tribes, this little-visited land-locked nation is an adventure cycling dream.

Please be aware that Lao is a developing country and in a state of constant flux. A road that last month was well surfaced and empty may, this month, be potholed or gravel, or a thoroughfare for trucks servicing a mine. Likewise, the accommodation is not always the best in Asia. Whilst all the hotels we choose have air-conditioning and hot water showers, some rooms are somewhat basic. To enjoy the beauty of this delightful country, one must be prepared for change and accept that things do not always go exactly to plan.

    The Mountains of Lao

    Dates: February 2025

Despite pockets of the country seeing much economic development over the last two decades, Laos remains a country somewhat lost in time. It is a mountainous and tranquil land, where for much of the time the only sound heard by travellers is that of bird song.
This cycling tour is an adventurous loop through the north of the nation, passing through ancient jungle where tigers roam, agricultural land that is home to minority groups, past mysterious prehistoric archaeological sites, and the craters and bombshells of a more modern era that bring home the stark horrors of war.
The byways on which we ride are quiet, winding, hilly, and tranquil, and the towns at which we stay vary from the back of beyond to tourist comfort.
